Hurricane Cristobal and a Warm Weekend Ahead

Today the area is enjoying pleasantly dry conditions after a cool front pushed through early Wednesday. The break will only last for today as much warmer air returns tomorrow on strong flow out of the south. This is the result of the ridge over the south central part of the country expanding east and north again. A large area of highs in the 90’s is becoming established across the southern tier of the country and this will surge northward over the weekend.  A week cool front will move through during the second half of the weekend but temperatures will remain above normal through at least early next week.  Last week’s area of disturbed weather that was approaching the Lesser Antilles became Hurricane Cristobal north of the Bahamas this week.  Next week may feature development in the Tropical Atlantic in two separate locations.

Today the area is experiencing a brief reprieve from the warmth and humidity from earlier in the week. Temperatures in the lower 70’s are widespread across Northern Ohio. Tomorrow’s highs will rise into the lower 80’s.

On Saturday temperatures and dew points will continue to wise as a very warm air mass returns from the south. A combination of temperatures around 90 degrees and high humidity will create uncomfortable conditions for the area. Saturday could possibly be warmest day the area has experienced this entire summer. On Sunday a dying cool front will approach and bring a chance of thunderstorms area wide. Temperatures on Sunday and Monday will be around 80 degrees, depending on cloud cover.

On Tuesday another cool front will approach the area with the chance of showers and thunderstorms.  Once again the weak nature of the cool front will mean temperatures before and after the front passes will be around 80 degrees.

Hurricane Cristobal formed earlier this week north of the Bahamas.  It is currently moving quickly to the northeast with sustained winds around 75mph. With the exception of high surf and rip currents, the Eastern USA was spared impacts from the system. Oddly enough this is currently the strongest tropical system on the planet.

Next week our attention will turn to western Caribbean Sea into the southern Gulf of Mexico and the central Atlantic. First a system currently moving into the Caribbean Sea may encounter conditions conducive for development further to the west.  Next a tropical wave emerging off the African coast on Friday may develop next week once it reaches the central Atlantic. Both systems will need watching as the weather pattern may bring one or both very close to the USA.

Warm August Week and Quiet Tropical Atlantic

After an unseasonably cool previous week, summery conditions will hold for the region this week and into the next. A slow moving and weak storm system is currently moving through the central Great Lakes Region as a ridge of high pressure is becoming established across the southern tier of the country. This system will move through during the middle of the week but will leave a boundary over the Ohio Valley that will keep scattered showers and thunderstorms going throughout the area. The ridge across the southern tier of the country will lead to some areas having their longest and hottest stretch of weather this summer. The tropical Atlantic is still very quiet but slow development of a system is possible in the area to the east of the Windward Islands by the weekend.

Today a weak low pressure and cool front are moving through the central Great Lakes generating showers and thunderstorms. Very warm conditions have spread across Northeast Ohio with high temperatures into the middle 80’s.

On Wednesday the front will be moving through Northern Ohio with a threat of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. High temperatures should return to the 80’s with conditions becomingly a little humid. On Thursday similar conditions can be expected for the region. A large area of 90’s with some 100’s will be found across the southern half of the country.

Friday a warm front will begin moving north through the area. This will set the stage for high temperatures in the middle 80’s during the weekend. With the front nearby there will also be a chance of thunderstorms.

Warm conditions will maintain through the beginning of next week with locations further west possibly seeing high temperatures around 90 degrees. The next cool front does not appear to reach the area until middle of next week.

The tropical Atlantic is currently quiet but there are signs activity may pick up as we head into the weekend. Several weak systems are currently cross the central Atlantic and may reach an area more conducive to develop west of Windward Islands.

Hurricane Trouble for Hawaii

The cool weather last week in Northeast Ohio has been replaced with much more seasonable temperatures this week. The deep trough that has plagued the region for much of July has relaxed and allowed, if only temporary, more seasonable air on to spread across the area. A large area of temperatures in 90’s stretches across much of the southern tier of the country with 100 degree temperatures spreading into Texas from the desert Southwest. The tropics have become active this week with the second hurricane of the season having formed in the Atlantic and two hurricanes approaching Hawaii.

Currently high pressure is controlling the weather across the area. High temperatures today will be a few degrees on either side of 80. A storm system is moving through the central part of the nation generating an area of showers and thunderstorms.

Hurricane Iselle with 80 mph winds is moving towards the Hawaiian island chain. Hurricane conditions are expected to over spread the big island tonight and tropical storm conditions will spread across the rest of the islands during the day Friday as the storm weakens. The last effects of the storm will end early Saturday on Kauai. Have rains will be largest impact for the islands though strong winds will be felt at higher elevations.

Following quickly behind Hurricane Iselle is Hurricane Julio with 105 mph winds. Currently it looks like the system will track just to the north of the Islands but close enough to bring them tropical storm conditions.  Once again heavy rains will be the main concern for the islands.

High temperatures will continue to rise into the lower 80’s for the weekend. A system passing to the south will make its closest approach on Saturday spreading high clouds and a possible shower and thunderstorm; especially the further south you go in the State.

The next system to impact the area will not arrive until Tuesday. At that time there will be an increase in chances for rain and high temperatures will fall back into the 70's after the cool front passes.
